Position Title: Gender & Child Welfare Officer.

Job Station: Katsina State.

INTRODUCTION :-

Gender & Child Welfare Officer job opportunity is available at Society for Youth Awareness and Health Development (SYAHD) for individuals who possess University degree in Social Sciences with academic training in women’s studies, gender and development or a relevant field.

Overview / Background

  • SYAHD is currently operating in two States namely Kano and Katsina state through donor funded projects. Our thematic areas are Educational services, Health, Household economic strengthening and psychosocial support to care givers, children, women, youth, and women empowerment through skills acquisition programs.
  • This is a Save the children International (SCI) Project funded by Canadian government through the Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Society for Youth Awareness and Health Development (SYAHD). Titled: “Reaching and Empowering Adolescents to make informed choices for their health (REACH) in Sandamu LGA, Katsina State.
  • Save the Children (SC) has been working in Nigeria since 2001, and is a strong, recognized and respected voice for children’s rights. Our programs currently support health and nutrition, education, child protection, food security, livelihoods and social protection in both development and humanitarian contexts. In Nigeria, the project aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of adolescent girls and boys (aged 10-19) in hard to reach, rural communities in Gombe, Zamfara and Katsina states. To achieve this aims, the project has 3 broad objectives. (1) Improving access to high quality, gender-sensitive and adolescent- friendly SRH services for unmarried and married adolescent girls and boys; (2) Increasing the decision-making of married and unmarried adolescent girls about their own SRHR; and (3) Improving the integration of civil society contributions and evidence-based best practices in ASRHR policy design and implementation at local and state levels.

Role Purpose

  • The Gender and child welfare officer report to the Team Lead
  • The Gender and Child Welfare Officer with the support of the Gender Equality Advisor and the state team is responsible for supporting the integration of a strong gender equality perspective on the “Reaching and Empowering Adolescents to make Informed Choices for their Health” (REACH) project at the community level while also looking at child safeguarding and participation. This may include ensuring that gender equality is mainstreamed at the community and partner level throughout the project’s results based management frameworks, strengthening and supporting gender equality strategies and facilitating gender equality capacity strengthening for field teams via training and tool development.
  • The post holder also provides technical support to the REACH project on gender equality at the community level. Additionally, as part of this role, the Gender child welfare officer will work closely with the Save the Children REACH team in the state.

As a member of the REACH Project team, the Gender and child welfare officer will:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :-

  • Provide high quality technical assistance to local government REACH program delivery team, building a solid evidence base to support the development implementation and evaluation of gender-transformative approaches
  • Lead on planning and implementation of feedback mechanisms with leaders, communities and beneficiaries
  • Be responsible for the strengthening and coordination of complain and response mechanism (CRM) activities
  • Supports REACH community program staff to strategically integrate gender equality through training and knowledge sharing activities.
  • Supports integration and collection of appropriate gender equality indicators and collaborates to monitor and evaluate to ensure that gender equality outcomes and results are achieved and documented.
  • Support in the development of social and behavior change communication approaches, materials and tools.
  • Support REACH program teams to review project deliverables and donor reports from a technical quality control perspective
  • Creates high quality narrative reports and documents that are complete and timely.
  • Supports the development and roll out of gender sensitive program/project management tools and results-based frameworks.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION :-

Essential:

  • A graduate University degree in Social Sciences with academic training in women’s studies, gender and development or a relevant field.
  • 1-2 years’ work experience with an NGO or CSO, with focus on women and girl’s/gender equality and children programming.
  • Experience working on normative change for gender equality and adolescent sexual and reproductive health in sensitive contexts
  • Experience in designing, implementing and evaluating gender-transformative social and behavior change communication interventions
  • Experience in working with children and understanding in child participation.
  • Experience in implementing gender-transformative approaches to health
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting with minimal supervision
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Specific knowledge of international development and gender equality issues; experience engaging children and other community members on gender equality issues desirable.

Desirable:

  • Strong organizational skills to work effectively to support multi-tasking.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to adjust to changing schedules and priorities.
  • Effective critical information gathering to create accurate reports.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, in English.
  • Fluency in English and Hausa, spoken and written
  • Good familiarity, networking and working relationships with relevant organizations.
  • Programming experience in community engagement.
